What GBPUSD is
GBPUSD is the price of one British pound in US dollars: at 1.3201, a pound buys 1.3201 dollars. It's known as "Cable", a name usually traced to the 19th century, when the exchange rate between London and New York was sent by the cable under the Atlantic. In the BIS Triennial Survey of April 2025, pound–dollar trades were 7.6% of global foreign exchange turnover, the fourth-largest pair.
| GBPUSD | Detail |
|---|---|
| Pip | 0.0001 |
| Pip value | $10 per standard lot of 100,000 pounds, $1 per mini lot, $0.10 per micro lot |
| Reference rate, 2 October 2026 | 1.3201 (from the ECB's euro rates) |
| One pound in rupees | ₹127.16 on the same day |
GBPUSD usually moves more in a day than EURUSD, so the same stop in pips can need a wider buffer. Size the trade with the lot size calculator.
What moves GBPUSD
- The Bank of England: its rate decisions, next on 5 November and 17 December 2026 at 17:30 IST, and the vote split among its policymakers.
- UK data: inflation, wages and jobs, retail sales and growth.
- The Fed and US data: as with every dollar pair, US CPI, the jobs report and Fed decisions often move GBPUSD more than UK news does.
- Politics and the budget: UK fiscal news has moved the pound sharply in the past, so watch for government budget dates.
